Summary: In Ricky of the Tuft, a queen has a baby who is ugly and misshapen. He is hideous but a fairy at his birth, bestows upon him incredible intelligence so he grows up very ugly but very smart. There is another queen who has two daughters. One is very ugly but very clever and smart and the other is very beautiful but very stupid. When the Prince (Ricky) was born the fairy said that whoever he fell in love with would receive incredible intelligence. Of the beautiful daughter of the other queen the fairy said that whoever she fell in love with would become extremely attractive. One day, the beautiful princess is out in the woods crying because her sister ends up with all the attention because although ugly, she is clever and witty. Ricky comes upon the crying princess and immediately falls in love with her for her beauty. He asks her if she will marry him one year from that day. She says yes and becomes brilliant. All of a sudden she gets all the attention again and forgets that she is supposed to marry Ricky. She is trying to decide who to marry one year later and comes across Ricky's servant preparing for the wedding. She returns to Ricky and marries him even though he is not attractive and they fall in love and he becomes handsome!
Who would you recommend this book to? Some of these I would recommend for children but some I would not recommend to anyone!
Potential problems or conflicts: Once again, pretty gory and some strange stuff that might be a little scary for kids.
My reaction: Perrault's fairy tales are similar to the others in that I really liked some of them and hated others. They were interesting to read to get a feel for the originals but I probably wouldn't read most of them to my kids.
